Your Ultimate Guide On Preparing For Your Headshot/Folio Session

How to Prepare for a Headshot or Folio Shoot with Dre Chez Photography
First off, congrats on booking your headshot or folio shoot with me. Whether you’re a seasoned pro, just starting out, or looking to refresh your portfolio, this guide will help you feel prepared and confident for our time together. My goal? To make sure you feel like the absolute best version of yourself and that your photos reflect your unique personality and talent.

Let’s dive in!

Arrive Early and Stress-Free
Melbourne traffic can be unpredictable, so plan ahead to ensure you arrive early. Give yourself ample time to get to the location, this way you’re not frazzled or rushing. Arriving early lets you settle in, take a deep breath, and get comfortable. Remember, the vibe we’re going for is confident and relaxed, so let’s keep the stress at bay from the very start.

What to Wear: Confidence is Key

Folio sessions are all about showcasing YOU, so wear clothing that makes you feel confident and comfortable. Choose pieces that you love and feel amazing in. Think about your go-to outfit when you want to look and feel your best. This shoot is about highlighting your unique vibe, so don’t overthink it, just wear what makes you feel fabulous.

Tips for Outfit Selection:

  • Variety is your friend: Bring a mix of outfits to give us plenty of options. Think casual, smart-casual, and polished—this way, we can capture different facets of your personality.
  • Avoid logos, neon colours, and busy prints: While fun, these can distract from your face, which is the real star of the show. Thin stripes can also warp in images, so best to skip those too.
  • Solid colours are winners: A clean, solid-coloured top works wonders for keeping the focus on you. If you love patterns, bring them along too. They can add some fun variety as long as they complement your vibe and branding.
  • Bring layers: Jackets, blazers, or cardigans can add depth and dimension to your photos. Plus, layers are great for creating different looks quickly.

Hair and Makeup: Keep It Natural but Polished
Less is often more when it comes to headshots and folio photos. The goal is to look like yourself, just a slightly more polished version. Here’s what I recommend:

  • Hair: Neat and groomed is the way to go. If you’re due for a trim or colour touch-up, schedule it a week or so before your session. Bring along a brush, hair ties, and some product for touch-ups during the shoot.
  • Makeup: Go for a natural look. Think dewy skin, lightly defined eyes, and a hint of colour on the lips. If makeup isn’t your thing, that’s totally fine too, just make sure your skin is clean and moisturised.
  • Brows and lashes: If you normally shape your brows or get your lashes done, book those appointments ahead of time. These small details can make a big difference in your photos.

Nails Matter
You might not think about your nails for a headshot shoot, but trust me, they’ll be noticeable if they’re messy and in the shot. Keep them clean, neat, and natural. If you’re into manicures, go for a classic, neutral colour that won’t distract from your overall look.

Prepping Your Skin: Glow, Baby, Glow
Your skin will be front and centre, so let’s make sure it’s looking its best:

  • Hydrate: Drink lots of water in the days leading up to your shoot. Hydrated skin is happy skin, and it’ll give you that natural glow.
  • Avoid alcohol and salty foods: I know, I know… not fun. But trust me, these can cause puffiness and make your skin look tired.
  • Get your beauty sleep: Aim for solid, restful sleep the night before. A well-rested face is a radiant face.
  • Moisturise: Keep your skin hydrated with a good moisturiser. This will ensure your makeup (if you’re wearing any) goes on smoothly.
  • If you’re updating your folio and shooting swimwear, plan accordingly to get whatever grooming needs to happen on time. Give your skin enough time to settle so it’s not flared or red.

What to Expect During the Shoot
My years of experience as both a model and a photographer mean I understand how it feels to be in front of the camera. Whether you’re a natural or feeling a bit nervous, I’ve got you. My goal is to create a comfortable, inclusive environment where you can relax and let your personality shine. Here’s a little insight into what our session will look like:

  • We’ll vibe: I’ll guide you through poses and expressions that suit your goals, whether you’re looking for professional headshots or creative folio shots. We’ll collaborate to find the best angles and looks for you.
  • Music and fun: I love setting the mood with music! It helps everyone loosen up. Let me know if you have a playlist you’d like to bring along!
  • Quick changes: With the variety of outfits you bring, we’ll be able to create multiple looks to suit different needs. It’s amazing how a quick outfit swap can transform the vibe of your photos.

After the Shoot
Up to 72 hours after our shoot, I’ll email you a gallery of your best images so you can select your favourite ones. I’ll carefully edit and retouch your final selections to make sure they’re polished yet natural. My editing style enhances your natural beauty. Think of it as a little sprinkle of magic, not a total transformation. I provide your final, edited, high res images up to 3 weeks after your final selections are made.
